Fun & Games

Great games for Scouts, Patrols and Troops.

Chair Football
A slower version of football

Outline
Playing time: From 10 to 30 minutes
Number of players: From 8 to 20
Played as: Team
Suitable location: Indoors

Equipment
Chairs (one each)
Goal posts (cones or bean bags)
A large ball

Description
Played like ordinary football except the Scouts must stay on the chair. The goal keepers can use their hands but everyone else must use only their feet.
The game is ideal for slowing down after a fast game and everyone is equal.
Every three or four minutes allow 10 seconds for chairs to be moved. This often leads to too many defenders or forwards. As a team game it builds the ideal of working as a team with everyone taking responsibity for the teams success.
The team with the most goals, wins.

Skittle
A quick game

Outline
Playing time: From 5 to 20 minutes
Number of players: From 8 to 50
Played as: Team
Suitable location: Indoors or outdoors when dry

Equipment
a skittle
2 beanbags / tennis balls
2 chairs

Description
Split into two teams of equal size. Line each team up against the East and West walls. Place two chairs, one for each team, aginst the North and South walls. Put a beanbag or tennis ball on each chair and a skittle in the centre of the room.
On the blow of a whistle the first player in each team runs to his chair, climbs on it and throws the beanbag at the skittle. Each player has three tries at hitting the skittle and must climb off the chair and retrieve the beanbag each time. The game continues as a relay either until all the players have had a turn or time is up.
The team who knocked the skittle over most times, wins.

Jump the Rope
A game of reaction and agility.

Outline
Playing time: From 10 to 20 minutes
Number of players: From 10 to 25
Played as: Team
Suitable location: Anywhere

Equipment
1 Rope with knot in end
Bit of chalk to mark out a circle

Description
The game requires a circle on the floor of your HQ which you can draw in chalk.
Get yourself a rope and tie a fist sized knot in the end. The rope should be just over the radius of the circle.
The game operates with someone in the centre holding the unknotted end of the rope and spinning around. Gradually pick up speed and the rope lifts up as you turn round.
The players standing on the circle then need to jump to avoid touching the rope as it spins. A player is out if they fail to jump to avoid the rope and it touches them. Players who go beyond the end of rope's reach (ie off circle) should also be given out.
The winner of the game is the player who is left.

Caution: The rope should not be spun too high ie above knee height. A possible problem to be aware of is the rope looping round a foot and pulling them over as you spin it. Watch carefully that it does not get caught on someone or stopped suddenly or you could be pulled over.

Head or Catch
Quiet and simple game with a football

Outline
Playing time: From 5 to 15 minutes
Number of players: From 10 to 40
Played as: Individuals
Suitable location: Anywhere

Equipment
A soft ball

Description
Scouts stand in a large circle with a Leader standing in the middle and the leader takes in turn to throw a ball to each player.
As the Leader throws, he will say either 'Head' or 'Catch'. The Scout must do the opposite either catching or heading the ball.
If the player does the wrong option they must sit down.
To make it slightly more taxing the Leader can randomly choose Scouts as opposed to just going round the circle in order.
Some additions are for the players to go down an their knees rather than being out and if they get it right next time they are back standing, get it wrong and they are out.
The winner is the last player standing.
